Yes, I have been arting on just my laptop and a tablet all these years. No cintiq, no giant screens. I am like a samurai who will only fight with a wooden sword because of honor n' stuff. Also, metal swords cost a ton of coin.

Why don't I finish this art?
There's a pile of pieces at this level, sitting on my desktop in a folder marked AIP - Art in Progress. I spend a few hours really into the piece, and then I have to go try to make money or pay some bills or fret about something and I forget.
Not knowing when I'll get to finish it, I'll post it up here because I like it. You can also see how I draw nowdays. I do a sketch on paper, flash it in front of a webcam and then go to work on top of that in Photoshop or sketchbook with my tablet. I like this because I'm able to futz with composition and proportions all the way until the end, something I can't do on non0digital paper. Skew, flip, stretch... play with it. I think that it eventually lets me make a better piece.

Finding a way to make the gal and the dino positioned together, without dominating or running over each other was the toughest part.
Also... the color was very tough. I wanted it to feel trompy. I think it does now.

If you've never heard of Dubstep before, this is a good place to be. It's slow, it's epic, it's pretty, it's dirty. I have a love-hate relationship with the genre, so I decided to make a mix that was just all the parts I loved. :D

This is my own sweet and low take on the super-trendy genre. All vocal, and shimmering, but with that earthshaking subbass propelling you onward... I call it HUGSTEP!!!!

I had the pleasure of joining the Hive gallery painters and 3EG at the Roxy theatre last night, for another live painting session.

This one is titled "Slowly," in response to the erratic, stressed out chatter my brain was making at me all day. Take that, brains!
2 foot canvas, 3 hours from doodle to done. I love the energy at these events, getting to jam with super talented artists, and usually hear some good music too.

This is the piece I live-painted at the Do LaB's Lucent L'amour festival. I painted for 3.5 hours, and then got to dancedancedance. It sold at that very night at auction and the profits went to the Sonic Muze charity.

The combination of artmaking, music, and dancing made it a perfect night for me. I hope to be out paining under the stars again soon.

Taking his impossibly catchy groves to an even more slickly produced level. Calvin is a remixer's dream.

Imogen Heap - Ellipse
This album is stunning and strangely deep. It's funny, it's beautiful, it's a work of art.

School of 7 Bells - Alpinism's
A hypnotizing set of songs. They sound like secrets on the wind. At least one third of the tracks are about Lucid dreaming, a fun touch.

Simian Mobile Disco - Temporary pleasure
They know how to do it. Unique grooves mixed with a little darkness and experimentation.

Beats Antique - Contraption Vol 1
Impossible not to wiggle to. The wobbly dubby touches make my day.

Ellie Golding & Little Boots - Various Singles
I like all the Little Boots remixes better than the originals, except Stuck on repeat, Remedy, and Earthquake. Ellie kept releasing sweetly brilliant tracks and I can't wait for a full album.

Basement Jaxx - Scars
This album is so yes. They do insanity RIGHT, coating it in melodic hooks. I turn it up so the buzzes and clicks sink into my bones.

Florence and the Machine - Lungs
Powerful, from the Lungs ballads. Lots of truth and fight in this one.

La Roux - Self Titled
Synthy, electo power. A unique voice kicking ass. Almost all of these superpoppy songs have been remixed into to dark, dubby and D&B versions, her clear voice complements these kind of reworks perfectly.

Royksopp - Junior
More fun than any of their previous albums. Golden!

Seeing the con from the other side of the table for my first time was a huge learning experience. I'm processing everything very slowly. I don't know what will come of it yet.

As a thanks to con-goers and all lovers of awesome, I've released the 2nd image in the Glowpocalypse set. She is the striker, the heat, the precise force. I'm keeping the final image under wraps. It's just for people who own one of the 25 sets. Hee!

Here's a new one for Summer 09! Inspired by the graffiti murals I saw in shops in the Haight-Ashbury area of SanFran this memorial day.

I've always been attracted to the ideas behind artcrime. Secret, bold creation under pressure with criminal consequences. Never put paint to a wall myself... but I might not refuse if the opportunity arose.

It also connects to my belief in making my way to where I want to go by my own route and means, like this artist making the moon by climbing on a ladder she painted herself.

Color is still what I enjoyed doing the most.

This piece and 3 other of my favorites will be up for silent auction at the SDCC Art Show. It's up on the Sails pavilion. They will be all framed and snazzy and for the taking.

Crane and Otter

In February there was some rain, and I wanted to draw some critters that don't mind getting wet.
The crane is Time, and the Otter is Space.
It's layers and layers of shapes and textures photoshopped to precision.

This piece made it's debut at the Nickeleodon Eco-lodeon show! Comedian/supernerd/voice actor Chris Hardwick bought it, and made my week!
This is the first piece I am experimenting with prints on. I'm making big 16x20 Glicee poster prints on heavy matte photo paper. Contact me at kelly@inkplay.net if you're interested.

On good days, a ride feels like this. The colors are supposed to be like a zingy citrus mango smoothie. Made out of tissue paper! Nom.

Also, The Boy and his Blob, a new wii game that I animated on for Wayforward has been officially announced!

It looks fantastic. All the animation was done classically with pencil, by hand with flipping and timing and all that good stuff! It's going to be a miyazaki like hand-drawn adventure. So be sure to pick it up for your Wii when it comes out around Christmas!

Circular joy:

Bike commuting.
I can't explain what an awesome surprise it was. I didn't think sporty things could make me feel good. I've always been a awkward spidery klutz. But then, my car broke and she came off craigslist and into my life.

Now I am a bona-fide bike commuter. It puts this rush of happy into the start and finish of my day that I didn't know could be there. Gas, the economy, health, global warming whatever- I do it because it's so much fun.

Music made me happy too. Soon I'll be sending sound out onto the net from this:

This is an ancient winter icon hanging somewhere in an old house. Inspired by tarot cards. I wanted a bringer of the season that hadn't been used before. There are symbols in it.

I am addicted to golds and browns and purples. I am going to try very hard to do something lighter next time.
This would be my holiday card. But it's awfully... Pagan?
I should just learn to paint. My excuse is that I don't like getting messy, but I like my art so much dirtier than the computer programs makes easy. This is all digital, colored with a mouse.

This track starts to take the mix into its story.

I love this loungy remix of the Chemical brother's classic. Even more spacey. You should feel what I feel.

6) The Longest Road (Sonik & Simpson remix) -Morgan Page feat. Lissie
I've been waiting for the perfect remix of this to pop up forever. It's not dj friendly for mixing, but the beauty of the song makes it worth it.

7) Stuck on Repeat vs. It's a Fine Day (Richard X Blend)- Little Boots vs. Opus 3
A classic, electro-fied. I used to listen to this song when I woke up on sunday mornings. Softens out the sass of Longest Road.

8) Sleep Deprivation (12" Version)- Simian Mobile Disco
Starts with back of your mind bleeps, and then ramps up into unstoppable an Harpsichord whirlwhind. So epic! What could possibly contain the power of this track?

9) Ce Jeu (Cool Kids Can't Die remix)- Yelle
The first strange discovery of this mix, poppy french girls taking out the harpsichord army with class and ease.

10) Lauren From Glebe (Damage Edit)- Muscles
We heard the music from over the fence, so we threw up our hands with a smile on our faces. Went to the front with our names on the list. Those who were strangers had turned into friends
This is what a good night out is about. I had to hold back from using more than one unashamedly joyful Muscles track in this set.

I've held on to the discovery of these two songs mashing up perfectly for a long time. Now it's finally recorded. Overdose takes the sappy happy if I Just can't get enough and turns it dark.

13) Shut Up And Let Me Go (Left/Right Remix) -The Ting Tings
The girl from the ting tings sasses back in a powerful remix. Don't tell me what I want.

14) Take on me (Where?) A-ha
I've lost the info for where I got this track. But it calls back to I just can't get enough with a eerie, transcendent version of the song.

15) Freak Me (VLRNA Remix)- Silk
Such a unique sounding remix. I love it's unexpectedness.

16) YOA (The Twelves Remix)- Theatre of Disco
Been in love with this track for months, though it is hard to mix.

Needed to draw and not click. Putting a sheet over my original doodle and finding the most important things in it helped me here. They were doodles I knew had something... but I'm wasn't sure what.

I would call this a design more than a drawing. I'm not happy that there's no emotion in it besides WHOOWSH WOAH SO COOL. So it's a design. Like a stained glass window.

You know what did have emotion? The 3rd season of Avatar. I held off watching this series for a long time, because the episodes I caught here and there on tv didn't hold me. But believe you me, I now have watched it fully and It Deserves Your Time and Attention. It is important to modern day animation storytelling. When you have some time to give it, do so, and you will not be sorry.

I've been doing a lot of this hard edged compu-art because I do not have to bend over a desk to do it. I can sit up and click and it gets me into playing with colors and shapes quicker than making a nice drawing does.

I hate desk.

They found him trapped between the pulses of a frequency first broadcast into space in 1991.

He still doesn't talk, but is an excellent navigator- and can plug into anything.

This unplanned doodle got colored because I liked the loops of the headphone cord. There's no thumbnail, so the drawing itself could be better planned, but I used it to experiment with another set of colors and textures. I wanted it to look like buzzing, crunchy synth sounds.
